Wall Tile Introuduction

Tiles are made out of various materials which are both natural and manmade. Tiles can be made of natural stone like marble, granite, slate, and travertine tile. They can also be made from ceramic or porcelain. Recently man-made materials like plastic and recycled glass, have been making their way into the mainstream.

Tiles come in all different sizes, from 4 inch tiles to 16 inch wide tiles. When deciding which size you would like to go with, consider the impact of smaller tiles versus larger tiles for the space. One way to decide on what type of tile to use, is to go to your local building supply store or a tile specialty store and look at samples. If you find a tile that you are interested in, then buy a few samples to take home with you. Place the tiles in an obvious part of the room, so that you can better test it out. Leave it out for a couple of days to see if it grows on you.

During installation, make sure to properly layout the tile pattern so that you don’t have any awkward cuts at the beginning, middle or end of your tile runs. Depending on the size of your project, it may be a good idea to rent an electric tile cutter to assist with the installation process. The material of the tile while determine which type of adhesive will be needed to install the tile — which will be either thin-set mortar or mastic. For areas that are constantly being subjected to humidity, like bathrooms and kitchens, it is best to use the thin-set mortar. Mastic is a water-soluble kind of adhesive that should only be used in areas with minimal water exposure.

For a dramatic change to any kitchen, bathroom, or any area of your home, you should consider the use of tile. You will be surprised at the many types of tile available in all shapes and sizes available for your wall tile project.
